Millionaire
The Millionaire, a classic sour cocktail, was believed to have been invented during Prohibition. These cocktails balance a sweet component with an acidic agent, such as lemon or lime juice. Over the past century, however, a number of cocktails have been dubbed Millionaires, and variations vary greatly. The Millionaire No. 1, which has apricot brandy, sloe gin, and Jamaican rum, and the Millionaire No. 2, which is the Bourbon-based sour you will find here, are usually split between them.

The Millionaire cocktail is a delightful blend of flavors, combining the richness of bourbon with the citrusy brightness of lemon and the sweetness of grenadine. Enhanced with the unique flavors of Grand Marnier and absinthe (or pastis), and given a luxurious texture from egg white, this drink is perfect for special occasions or a cozy night in.
Ingredients- 2 ounces bourbon
- ¾ ounce Grand Marnier
- ¼ ounce absinthe or pastis
- ½ ounce homemade grenadine (or store-bought if necessary)
- ½ ounce egg white
- ½ ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
- Garnish: Freshly grated nutmeg
- Prepare Homemade Grenadine (optional):
- Combine fresh pomegranate juice, sugar, and a splash of pomegranate molasses and orange flower water. Simmer until thickened, then cool.
- Mix the Ingredients:
- In a shaker, combine the bourbon, Grand Marnier, absinthe (or pastis), grenadine, egg white, and freshly squeezed lemon juice.
- Dry Shake:
- Shake vigorously without ice for about 15 seconds. This helps emulsify the egg white, creating a frothy texture.
- Add Ice and Shake Again:
- Add ice to the shaker and shake once more until well-chilled.
- Strain:
- Double-strain the mixture into a chilled coupe glass to ensure a smooth finish.
- Garnish:
- Grate fresh nutmeg over the top of the drink for an aromatic touch.
Enjoy your luxurious Millionaire cocktail, a true classic with a modern twist! Cheers!
