Full Monte

The Full Monte is a distinctive twist on the classic Manhattan that’s bound to captivate even the most discerning palates. This delightful blend combines the rich, smoky essence of rye whiskey with the bittersweet nuances of Amaro Montenegro, a beloved Italian liqueur embraced by mixologists worldwide. Crafted for winter indulgence, each sip of this invigorating drink imparts a refreshing minty sensation, awakening your senses with every taste. With its simple yet flavorful ingredients, it’s a breeze to recreate in the comfort of your home. Don’t miss the chance to savor the Full Monte – whether you’re a seasoned enthusiast or an adventurous spirit, this exquisite concoction promises to leave a lasting impression. If you’re looking for a cocktail that is a little bit bitter and a little bit sweet, you might want to try the Full Monte. This cocktail is a relatively new creation, having been invented in Nashville, Tennessee in recent years. The Full Monte is a spin-off of another popular cocktail, the Reverse Manhattan. The Reverse Manhattan is made with vermouth, which gives it a distinctive flavor. The Full Monte was first created at Gertie’s Bar at The 404 Kitchen in Nashville. The bartender who created it, Jenelle Engelson, substituted the sweet vermouth in the Reverse Manhattan with Amaro Montenegro and the Full Monte was born. While the origins of the Full Monte are relatively recent, the history of Amaro Montenegro dates back to 1885. The liqueur is made in Bologna, Italy, and is named after Princess Elena of Montenegro. It is made from a secret blend of 40 botanicals, which coalesce into a predominate flavor of orange peels, florals, and spice.

Variations

The Reverse Manhattan

The Full Monte is already a twist on a classic Manhattan, but you can take it one step further by making a Reverse Manhattan. Instead of using sweet vermouth, swap the proportions of rye whiskey and amaro Montenegro. This will result in a more bitter and complex drink that highlights the amaro’s floral notes.

The Full Monte No.2

The Full Monte No.2 is another variation of the drink that uses bourbon instead of rye whiskey. This gives the cocktail a sweeter and smoother taste that pairs well with the amaro’s vanilla and orange flavors.

To make the Full Monte No.2, combine 2 oz. amaro Montenegro, 1 oz. bourbon, and a dash of Angostura bitters in a mixing glass with ice. Stir until chilled and strain into an ice-filled glass.

The Full Monty

For a more tropical twist on the Full Monte, try making the Full Monty. This variation adds pineapple and lime juice to the mix, giving the drink a fruity and refreshing taste.

To make the Full Monty, combine 1 1/2 oz. amaro Montenegro, 3/4 oz. rye whiskey, 1 oz. pineapple juice, 1/2 oz. lime juice, and 1/4 oz. simple syrup in a shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into a glass filled with ice.

The Full Monte Sour

If you prefer sour cocktails, try making the Full Monte Sour. This variation adds lemon juice and egg whites to the mix, giving the drink a creamy and tangy taste.

To make the Full Monte Sour, combine 1 1/2 oz. amaro Montenegro, 3/4 oz. rye whiskey, 1 oz. lemon juice, 1/2 oz. simple syrup, and 1 egg white in a shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into a glass filled with ice.

Ingredients
  • Amaro Montenegro – 2 ounces (60ml)
  • Rye Whiskey (or Bourbon) – 1 ounce (30ml)
  • Angostura Bitters – 1 dash
  • Orange Peel
  • Garnish – Luxardo Maraschino Cherry/bourbon-soaked cherry

Instructions
  1. Add all liquid ingredients to a mixing glass over cracked ice. Stir until visibly chilled or dilution is apparent.
  2. Single strain into a rocks glass over ice.
  3. Express the oil from the orange peel over the glass and line the rim, then discard.
  4. Skewer your cherry of choice and use it as a garnish.
  5. Enjoy!
