Slivopolitan

Slivopolitan

Like a good chef, a great bartender is said to be able to make anything taste good. In actuality, though, even experts like me find it extremely challenging to use a number of liquors in cocktails. Using other ingredients to balance these uncooperative spirits without letting them overpower the drink or totally obscure it requires some ingenuity.

Tasting Notes for the Slivopolitan

Color: The Slivopolitan presents a beautiful, inviting hue, often a soft pink or peach, depending on the plum puree used.

Nose: The aroma is a delightful combination of earthy slivovitz undertones, rich, sweet notes of plum puree, and bright citrus from the Cointreau.

Palate: On the palate, the cocktail is surprisingly smooth. The slivovitz, while potent, harmonizes well with the sweetness of the Cointreau and the tartness of the lime juice. The plum puree adds a luscious texture, creating a round, satisfying mouthfeel.

Finish: The finish is crisp and refreshing, with lingering notes of plum and a hint of citrus, making it a drink that invites another sip.

Our Review

Slivovitz, the robust Eastern European plum brandy, can be a challenge to work with due to its powerful flavor profile. While many traditionalists enjoy it neat, its intensity can overshadow more delicate ingredients when mixed. Despite various attempts to incorporate it into cocktails—often with bitters, vermouth, or egg whites—the results have been less than stellar.

However, the Slivopolitan stands out as a winning combination. This cocktail deftly balances the strength of slivovitz with the sweetness of Cointreau, the richness of plum puree, and the brightness of fresh lime juice. The result is a cocktail that allows the unique character of slivovitz to shine without overwhelming the palate.

To make it, simply shake the slivovitz, Cointreau, plum puree, and lime juice with ice until chilled, then double-strain it into a coupe glass. The garnish of a fresh plum slice adds an elegant touch and a hint of what to expect in flavor.

In a world where slivovitz often takes center stage, the Slivopolitan manages to strike a harmonious chord, creating a cocktail that is both bold and beautifully balanced. It's a refreshing option that pairs well with a variety of foods, making it an excellent choice for gatherings or a casual evening at home. Enjoying this drink is a delightful way to experience the robust nature of slivovitz while still savoring a well-crafted cocktail.
